My husband has played music professionally for over twenty years, and in that twenty years many treasured guitars have passed through his hands. Some stayed in his care for years, some for only a time, and a select few are hopefully lifelong treasures that we will pass down through our family legacy.
As any musician knows, and any music fan can imagine, an instrument carries stories by way of the hands that play it, the venues in which its sounds reverberate, and the many repairs a well loved and hard played one will see. But these stories and memories can get lost as years go by.
Unless you have a beautiful leather notebook specifically designed to write these things down. My husband came home from the Alabama Theater today with a Case Note Diary, a gift from Brant Beene. Brant is a musician, artisanal mandolin maker, and manager of the Alabama Theater. And the man behind Case Notes. They’re small enough to fit in most instrument cases and feature pages for detailed instrument descriptions, notes on repairs, special events that the instrument has played, autographs, stories, and more within the 160 pages.
I can’t tell you enough how exciting this gift is to me and Duquette! We all forget the things we have done and seen. This is a really beautiful solution to the things that not only we will want to remember, but what our children and grandchildren will want to know about as they hold PopPop’s ole tourin guitar.

I love the people at The Scout Magazine. Their content is a constant inspiration to me. Needless to say, I was incredibly happy to see “Over Coat” featured on their blog today!
Thanks guys.

Not to undermine any comments that are about to be made about this great band, but the feeling that I have about them is based on one day - an afternoon that turned into an evening - and as far as anything should be concerned, the day and night in question, were about as good as they could have…
Duquette Johnston & The Rebel Kings | Roll Baby Roll
Birmingham, Alabama’s Duquette Johnston pulls out this energetic, Delta Spirit-esque rock song for a 7” he recorded for Communicating Vessels. A quick look at his bandcamp shows that he’s been recording for a few years now - his March ‘09 It Sings Because It Has A Song is a slightly more lo-fi, acoustic affair (including the above track Roll Baby Roll in its earlier form) and 2010’s Rugged & Fancy, both of which are being offered entirely for *FREE*. Whoa.
He’s also got a fairly interesting back story. According to Duquette’s artist bio:
For several years Duquette slipped into a dark place and found himself locked up in the Etowah County Detention center facing a very long prison sentence. By the grace of God he was given a second chance and released his first solo album Etowah, on Superphonic Records. In the present Duquette Just released a 45 on Communicating Vessels and is making a new record with The Gum Creek Killers to be released sometime this year along with a spilt 45 with Wooden Wand.
Roll Baby Roll above comes off the self-titled 7”, which also features the upbeat track Rise Up Children, both of which can be heard here and purchased here. He, along with other Communicating Vessels artists, can also be heard over at soundcloud. Stop by bandcamp and give him a listen!

Elliott McPherson seems happy spending his nights and weekends with his family. Previously, he was away playing guitar in the popular and now-defunct Alabama (and southeastern) rock band The Dexateens, who quietly called it quits in 2010, much to their fans’ surprise.
McPherson loved…
